- Sunlight: French marigolds thrive in full sun, so choose a location that receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day. Adequate sunlight ensures sturdy growth, abundant blooms, and vibrant flower colors.
- Soil: These plants prefer well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (around 6.0 to 7.0). Before planting, amend the soil with organic matter, such as compost, to improve its fertility and drainage.
- Watering: French marigolds have moderate water needs. Water them when the top inch of soil feels dry, providing enough water to thoroughly moisten the root zone. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot. Water at the base of the plant to keep the foliage dry, as wet leaves can encourage diseases.
- Mulching: Applying a layer of organic mulch around the base of French marigolds can help retain soil moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weed growth. Use materials like straw, wood chips, or shredded leaves as mulch.

Marigolds germinate quickly, sprouting within a few days and blooming in about 8 weeks, making them easy to grow from seed. Sow seeds directly outside after all danger of frost, 1 inch apart and water thoroughly after planting.
Marigolds only need enough water to dampen the soil, and they only require watering about once every ten days. The soil should be allowed to dry out on the surface before watering. The base of the plant should receive the water, and the plant should not be watered from overhead.
Marigolds thrive in full sun; therefore, it is best to plant during spring and hot summer months. Marigolds can even handle the reflected heat and light of paved surfaces as long as they get regular moisture. Another fun fact, marigolds bloom better and more often in poorer soil!
